The wind never quite picked up for the Broadway version of *Beaches*.
Producers of the story of friendship for the stage have announced that its last show will be May 24, although it had originally been scheduled to run through Sept. 6.
The move comes two weeks after the show was locked out of nominations for this year's Tony Awards.
*Beaches* is based on the same 1985 novel by Iris Rainer Dart the hit movie of the same name is adapted from. It depicts best friends C.C. (Bette Midler) and Hillary (Barbara Hershey) sharing a friendship over decades. The tear-jerker memorably featured Midler's song "Wind Beneath My Wings."

A national tour is planned for 2027, with plans to be announced later this year, according to the official announcement.
"Bringing a new musical to Broadway is always an enormous undertaking, and we are deeply proud of this company who created a production filled with heart, humanity, humor, and emotional truth," producer Jennifer Maloney-Prezioso said. "Night after night, audiences have laughed, cried, called their friends on the way out of the theater, and connected deeply with this story of friendship and love. That impact is real, and it will stay with people long after the final curtain. We are profoundly grateful to everyone who helped bring *Beaches* to life at the Majestic Theatre, and look forward to sharing this special show with audiences across America on our national tour."
The *New York Times* noted that the closure is further evidence of a weak Broadway season, in which just six musicals debuted, compared to 14 last year.
