Britney Spears Finished ‘Overprotected’ After Justin Timberlake’s Breakup Text, Director Says

Britney Spears reportedly received the text ending her relationship with Justin Timberlake while a production crew waited for her to complete one of the most memorable sequences in the “Overprotected” music video.

Director Chris Applebaum revisited the 2002 shoot during an appearance on Hyperfixated with Joseph Shepherd, recalling how Spears remained inside her trailer as the crew prepared to film the Darkchild remix’s rain-soaked finale.

Applebaum said Spears showed him the message on her flip phone. He initially offered to end the shoot, but she ultimately returned to the set and completed the performance.

Spears showed professionalism after receiving the news rather than attempting to explain the private circumstances behind her breakup with Timberlake.

The Crew Had Been Filming for About 20 Hours

Applebaum said the production was approximately 20 hours into its shoot when the crew prepared to film the final sequence. Spears did not emerge from her trailer, and choreographer Brian Friedman warned the director that something serious had happened.

“He was like, ‘No, no, get away. It’s a bad situation,’” Applebaum recalled, according to Entertainment Weekly. As Applebaum and Friedman discussed what to do, Spears’ personal assistant opened the trailer door and told the director that the singer had agreed to see him.

Spears Showed Applebaum the Message on Her Flip Phone

Applebaum remembered entering an unusually quiet trailer and asking Spears whether she was all right. “And Britney’s like, ‘Um, well, something happened,’” he said. “And she shows me her flip phone screen, and I saw that her boyfriend had written to her to end the relationship.”

He told Spears that he understood if she wanted to end the shoot early. As he prepared to leave, however, he noticed that she had been eating animal crackers and decided to offer another option.

Applebaum Encouraged Her to Channel the Breakup Into the Performance

“I don’t know why that inspired me,” Applebaum said. He suggested that Spears could return to the set and deliver a performance powerful enough to show Timberlake that he had “messed up the best thing that he’s ever had.”

Applebaum said the suggestion immediately changed her response. “She just, like, light bulb, and was like, ‘That’s it. You’re right. Let’s do that,’” he recalled during the Hyperfixated interview. Spears then returned to film the sequence that appears during the bridge of “Overprotected (The Darkchild Remix).”

“And she came out, and that’s why that performance was so cool,” Applebaum said. He recalled showing the completed footage to Friedman, who became emotional after seeing how the performance captured his choreography.

“This does my dance routine justice in a way I’ve never seen before,” Friedman said, according to Applebaum. Friedman later received an MTV Video Music Award nomination for the video’s choreography.

Applebaum Has Told Parts of the Story Before

Applebaum discussed the incident in a 2022 Instagram post and later described it during a 2023 ABC News interview. In those earlier accounts, he said the message on Spears’ phone read, “It’s over.”

Spears also wrote in her 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, that Timberlake ended their relationship through a text message. The former couple met as young performers on The All-New Mickey Mouse Club and dated from 1999 until their highly publicized split in 2002.
