Cary Elwes reveals to PEOPLE the "very important" part of his 25-year marriage to wife Lisa Marie Elwes
The couple first met in 1991 at a chili cook-off in Malibu and the Dead Man's Wire actor remembers telling Lisa Marie, "It's going to be a crazy ride"
The pair, who hit a milestone anniversary in 2025, share 18-year-old daughter Dominique
Cary Elwes knows what it takes to make a marriage work.
The actor, 63, who celebrated his 25th wedding anniversary with wife Lisa Marie, 54, last June, tells PEOPLE he credits their longevity to “living in gratitude.”
“I think that's a very important part of our relationship, not just for each other, but for what we have,” he adds.
The star of the new movie Dead Man’s Wire says spending time with his wife and their daughter Dominique, 18, is a priority.
“I need to be with my family. My family are who I am,” he says. Being away from them when he shoots a movie is tough: “On the set, as soon as they yell ‘Cut!’ and send me home, I’m bereft without my family.”

Elwes and Lisa Marie have been together since 1991 when they met at the Malibu Chili Cook-Off, a festival with carnival rides and live music.
“We went on one of those rides together. And I told her right after, I said, 'This is pretty much how it's going to be. It's going to be a crazy ride,' "he says.
Indeed, the past year has been filled with highs and lows for the Elwes family. They lost their house last January in the California wildfires. They also celebrated their 25 year anniversary and saw Dominique graduate from high school.
The teen is now studying film at college. And though the Elweses are empty nesters, they don’t necessarily feel like they are.

“God bless her, she comes home,” Elwes says of Dominique. “She likes being with the family so far.”
The star of The Princess Bride adds that it’s a “blessing” she’s following in his footsteps into the movie industry.
“She loves it. She's already made her first short movie,” he says. “I'm really proud of her. She's the best production I'll ever do.”
Elwes also shares the advice about the industry he’s shared with Dominique.

“I've just told her to be herself. Don't try to be anyone else,” he says. “I think it's your uniqueness that makes you interesting, not trying to be someone. People see through that. So, just who you are is beautiful. You don't have to change it for anyone. Just be yourself and the rest will follow,” says the actor.
Elwes hopes to work with her some day: “She's going to end up being a bigger star than me. I'll have to talk to her agent for sure.”
Dead Man’s Wire is playing in select theaters now before going wider on Friday, Jan. 16.
