Celebs focus on Dems winning House in eleventh hour midterms fundraising

With less than two weeks before the midterm elections, some high-profile names are adding their voices to a flurry of fundraising pitches warning of the dangers of Republicans maintaining control of the House.

A slew of famous faces — including Barbra Streisand, “West Wing” star Bradley Whitford, documentarian Ken Burns, and scientist and TV personality Bill Nye — have splashed their names on money-raising efforts for Democrats in recent weeks.

In a Tuesday email to supporters sent by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) bearing Streisand’s name, the Academy Award winner wrote, “As someone fortunate to have a platform larger than most, I believe it is both my right and my duty to speak up when I see injustice in the world.”

Streisand, one of the Democratic Party’s top celebrity fundraisers and a fierce critic of President Trump, said in the DCCC pitch, “We can't have a president who doesn't respect our constitution and relies on his GOP puppets in the House majority to carry out his every whim.”

“We need a Democratic House Majority if we have any hope of putting a check on this president,” Streisand, 84, added.

Another email sent last week by the DCCC and signed by Whitford struck a similar tone.

“You might know me from my time on ‘The West Wing’ or the movie ‘Get Out,’ but I'm reaching out because the political reality we face today is far from fiction,” said Whitford, who played fictional White House chief of staff Josh Lyman on the NBC political drama.

Accusing Trump and the Republican House majority of infringing on the rights of Americans, Whitford said, “I can't fathom letting Trump hold office with unchecked power for another two years.”

“That’s why I’m doing everything I can to ensure Donald Trump and the GOP lose the House this year — and I hope you are too,” the 67-year-old actor said.

Democrats need to flip a net of three seats in next month’s election in order to capture a 218-217 majority in the lower chamber.

“American Revolution” documentary filmmaker Burns has signed on to nearly 20 fundraising emails sent by Rep. Maggie Goodlander's (D-N.H.) reelection campaign.

“I’ve devoted my life to telling the American story — studying the moments when this country faced genuine crossroads, when the path chosen determined not just a generation, but the character of the nation itself,” Burns said in an email from Goodlander's campaign committee, Maggie for Congress.

“I believe, with the same conviction I bring to my work, that our country is at one of those crossroads right now,” he continued.

“If Republicans succeed in unseating Maggie from NH-2, retaking the House becomes virtually impossible — and any chance of accountability dies with it,” Burns said.

Another email from the DCCC bearing Nye’s signature and photo cautioned supporters that democracy is on the line in November.

“Hi, it’s Bill Nye — yes, the Science Guy! You might be used to me teaching you about physics or space, but I’m reaching out today about the future of our democracy, because it needs our attention,” the science educator said.

“Electing Democrats is the best way to fight back against the administration,” he continued.

“The future direction of our country is at a crucial crossroads,” Nye said, “but we can help restore balance and protect our democracy by taking back the House majority in November.”
