Stephen Colbert may have said goodbye to the Ed Sullivan Theater, but has "The Late Show" left the building?

A sign from the CBS late-night talk show was recently sold in an auction, nearly two months after Colbert signed off the air following the cancellation of his show. But for fans of the long-running broadcast, questions about the show's iconic marquee and other memorabilia from the series remain.

West Hollywood restaurant WeHo Bistro confirmed in an Instagram post Monday, June 29, that it had acquired a sign from the talk show after purchasing it in an auction. The restaurant, which temporarily placed the sign on its roof, said it wanted the sign to remain on public display after learning that proceeds from the auction would benefit humanitarian nonprofit World Central Kitchen.

"We're incredibly honored to welcome this special piece of late-night television history to WeHo Bistro," the restaurant wrote. "Thank you, Stephen Colbert, for the laughter, intelligence, kindness and magic you've shared with all of us over the years."

After a two-week period, the sign will be moved inside WeHo Bistro, the restaurant noted, and displayed on a wall "where everyone will be able to enjoy it for years to come."

"The Late Show," which was filmed at the iconic Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City, had various signage during the talk show's production, including a blue and red marquee that stood at the theater's entrance.

Colbert also had "Late Show" signs inside the talk show's studio, as seen in previous footage. One sign was hung above an awning and set against a starry backdrop, while a smaller sign decorated the front of Colbert's desk.

Was Stephen Colbert 'Late Show' sign taken down from Ed Sullivan Theater?

As of Thursday, July 2, the "Late Show" marquee outside the Ed Sullivan Theater remains on-site, USA TODAY can confirm.

In a statement to USA TODAY, WeHo Bistro said the sign it acquired from the late-night talk show was taken from the theater's interior.

Ed Sullivan Theater's future: What will happen to iconic venue after 'Late Show' finale?

The Ed Sullivan Theater, which first opened in 1927, is a 13-story shadow box preserving bits from a rich history of pop culture pinnacles past. Aside from "The Late Show," the storied venue has hosted several iconic shows and performances over the years, from "The Ed Sullivan Show" and the "Late Show with David Letterman" to the American television debut of The Beatles.

Following the cancellation of Colbert's show, CBS has since filled "The Late Show" timeslot with the syndicated "Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen." But the network has yet to reveal plans for the theater and did not respond to USA TODAY's previous request for comment.
