Maxine Peake plays one of the main characters in a film being shot in Cromer

A film starring actors Maxine Peake and Gemma Jones will be shot in a Norfolk seaside town.

The Bright Side Running Club - based on a book about the power of friendship after a cancer diagnosis - will be filmed in Cromer later this year.

The film and its two female leads were touted at Cannes Film Festival in May, with financial support for the shoot agreed in the rather less glitzy surroundings of a Cromer's council offices.

North Norfolk District Council has decided to give an undisclosed sum to the project in the belief the town's on-screen exposure will boost tourism.

The film takes the US title of the Josie Lloyd novel, The Cancer Ladies' Running Club.

The Brighton-based author wrote the novel following her own cancer diagnosis in 2017 and, like the book, the film follows the story of 40-something Keira.

Keira, a mother-of-three, does not want to group-up with fellow cancer patients but finds herself embracing running in the company of "brilliant, funny" women also going through treatment.

Council documents stated that the town should expect additional income while the shoot is taking place and when the film airs, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Filming took place in Cromer and Norwich in January for the latest episodes in the BBC drama Strike and its seafront and pier starred in the 2013 Alan Partridge film, Alpha Papa.
