Jenna Johnson shared a video of herself accidentally headbutting her Dancing With the Stars partner Harry Shum Jr. during rehearsals for Tuesday’s new episode.
“Dance is a dangerous sport,” Johnson captioned a video of the injury, later joking in a post-episode interview, “I tried to take Harry out.”
Shum and Johnson’s tango to Mariah Carey’s “It’s Like That” still earned them an impressive 24 from the judges, solidifying their season 35 lead.
Harry Shum Jr. is finally taking part in an ancient Dancing With the Starstradition — suffering a nasty injury and stepping out onto the ballroom anyway.
Jenna Johnson, Shum’s pro partner, shared a video of the accidental scrape to her Instagram on Wednesday. The two-time winner of the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy can be seen dramatically dropping to the ground and sliding toward Shum in the video. He then leaps toward her, his face hanging in mid-air just inches from hers. Before he can pull away, Johnson launches forward too quickly, slamming Shum’s forehead with her own.
Shum brings his hand to his head in pain and falls backward, splaying his limbs out like a rag doll. The pair laugh at the absurdity of the injury, with Johnson writing in the caption, “Soooo dance is a dangerous sport LOL 🤷🏻♀️ sorry for head butting you [Harry Shum Jr.]”
The pair teased the injury in an interview with Extraconducted moments after Tuesday’s new episode of the series’ 35th season concluded.
“I’m actually really excited. I’m going to post a fun video of an injury we endured this week, that was my fault,” the dancer explained. “But I tried to take Harry out, multiple times.” In fairness, Shum replied that he did “step on” Johnson “a couple times.” But she cops to having broken his toe, so they call it even.
“We had one day of rehearsal, I think it was Sunday, we were just beating each other up,” Shum joked.

The mutual forehead bruising was hardly visible and scarcely mattered on week 4, the series’ first-ever Mariah Carey-inspired theme night.
Shum and Johnson danced a lively tango to the elusive chanteuse’s 2005 ditty “It’s Like That,” earning a scintillating 24 from the judges. What’s more, Shum’s Glee costar Amber Riley, who won season 17 of DWTS, filled in as the performance’s guest vocalist, giving Shum some much-needed support during his intricate routine.

Shum and Johnson have dominated the season 35 competition so far, which doesn’t come as a total surprise, given Shum’s extensive past dance experience. He even appeared in the music video for the Carey song he danced to.
Though the pair still maintain a strong lead, they were outdone on Tuesday by Traitors costars Maura Higgins and Mark Ballas, who, after earning the first 9 from a judge all season, set the bar up in the clouds with a new high score of 25.
Dancing With the Stars airs every Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC and Disney+, and streams the next day on Hulu.
