Kevin Dietsch / Getty ImagesElon Musk is a controversial figure.Outside of being the world's first trillionaire, Musk was previously the figurehead of the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency — aka DOGE.
DOGE oversaw funding cuts of pediatric cancer research, as well as the firing of thousands of veterans working as federal employees, and an all-out attack on diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. (The list goes on.)
And now, during a sit-down interview with the Economist Editor-in-Chief Zanny Minton Beddoes, the world's richest man was asked if he understood why some people may "loathe" him, and his reaction is going viral.

Leon Neal / Getty ImagesIn a one-minute and thirty-second-long clip from the interview, Minton Beddoes asked Musk, "Some people do loathe you, but do you understand why?"

To which he responded, "Maybe some people do loathe me, and that's probably true. I don't care."

The Economist / Viax.com"But the fact that, as you pointed out, a quarter of a billion people follow me, is that I think a lot more people actually like me than don't."

The Economist / Viax.com"And I think a lot more people hate you, and the media, more than you realize," he continued.
"Do you realize the media is despised? Do you realize that journalists — the view of journalists — is, like, the favorable view of journalists is, like, 15 percent?"
"The shoe is on the other foot. They hate you," he said. "They hate you far more than they hate me."

The Economist / Viax.comMinton Beddoes goes on to acknowledge a general loss of trust in journalism, as well as mistakes made by individual journalists within the industry. Elon, however, goes back to the whole "loathing" thing, which seems to now be living rent-free in his mind, as he pressed, "Speaking of loathing, you are loathed far more than I am."

This gets a smile out of Minton Beddoes, who admits, "I think very few people know who I am relative to you, so I don't think I play in the same game."
