General Hospital fans went without their favorite black t-shirt-wearing anti-hero this year when Steve Burton and his alter ego, Jason Morgan, left the canvas. He returned to Port Charles over the summer, and now, Soap Central has learned the scoop on just how long he may be sticking around this time!

TMZ published a story related to Burton's on-air real-life custody agreement with his former wife, Sheree. The same story revealed that Burton signed a three-year deal with GH when he returned to the show's studios in June.

Burton first joined GH in 1991 as Jason Quartermaine, the son of Alan Quartermaine (Stuart Damon) and his mistress, Susan Moore (Gail Ramsey). After Susan's death (she was murdered by Crane Tolliver, the late Lila Quartermaine's first husband), Jason came to live with Alan and Monica (Leslie Charleson) in the main house.

At first, Monica was opposed to having the product of Alan's betrayal living under her roof, but she changed her mind after Susan's death. Monica grew to love Jason as her own son.

Over the years, Burton has left GH. The writers explain his absence by killing Jason off, but, of course, a window is usually left open in the form of no body being found. Soap fans know that when no corpse is located, the odds of a return are increased significantly.

Comings & Goings

Burton exited GH in 2012, shortly before the show's 50th anniversary. He wasn't out of the soap world for very long. He joined the cast of The Young and the Restless as Dylan McAvoy, a war hero who was the lovechild of Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) and Paul (Doug Davidson).

Burton won his second Daytime Emmy in 2017 for playing Dylan. After he left Y&R, the actor returned to GH and his role as Jason. It turned out that the man everyone thought was Jason was, in reality, his twin, Drew Cain, first played by Billy Miller; now, the part is played by Cameron Mathison.

Burton exited GH again in 2021. That's when Jason was presumed dead in a cave-in. While he was gone, Kelly Thiebaud's character, Britt, was killed off, saving Josslyn's (Eden McCoy) life. Next, Burton came back to GH in 2024.

He wasn't alone; Britt was resurrected, too. Recently, Jason saved her from an unbalanced Anna Devane (Finola Hughes), who nearly killed Britt, believing she had to be eliminated as she was the daughter of Cesar Faison (Anders Hove).

Will Jason and Britt be able to continue their romance in light of Anna's actions? Stay tuned!
