Lane Kiffin could hardly have asked for a better debut at LSU, as the Tigers delivered a mammoth 51-10 win over Clemson on Saturday.

As LSU handed Dabo Swinney the worst defeat of his tenure as Clemson head coach, the college football community had plenty of things to say.

LSU controlled virtually every aspect of the game on Saturday, outgaining Clemson by 499 total yards while holding a staggering 309-40 advantage on the ground. The Tigers also ran 47 plays in Clemson territory, compared to just six for Clemson.

And if those numbers weren’t enough, here are some more that paint a damning picture of what Clemson put up on Saturday night.

Clemson’s struggles were particularly evident in the opening half, as the Tigers managed only 54 total yards, their fewest in any first half during Swinney’s tenure. They also went 0-for-8 on third down, tying their worst third-down performance in a half under Swinney, which previously came against Troy in 2011.

Clemson entered halftime trailing by 28 points, the second-largest halftime deficit of Swinney’s career. The only larger deficit came when Clemson trailed West Virginia by 29 points at halftime of the 2012 Orange Bowl.

Clemson also opened last season against LSU, falling 17-10. However, Saturday’s blowout was on an entirely different level and immediately reignited questions about Swinney’s future with Clemson.

“The powers that be at Clemson gotta give Dabo an ultimatum. Either run a college football program in 2026, or we gotta move on,” The Athletic’s Tony Jones wrote.

“At this rate, it’d be a surprise to see Dabo Swinney last the year as Clemson head coach. It’s only Week 1, lots of football to play, but there were literally no answers to LSU on either side of the ball,” Pro Football Network’s Oliver Hodgkinson wrote.

Clemson briefly appeared to have the upper hand early in the game, but its only points came after an unusual mistake.

A Sam Leavitt pass bounced off Malik Elzy’s hands and landed with Ashton Hampton at the Tigers’ 33-yard line. After the turnover, Clemson needed only four plays before Nolan Hauser drilled a 49-yard field goal to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead in the first quarter.

That moment proved to be the final bright spot of the night for Clemson. LSU quickly took control and never looked back, leaving Swinney and his team searching for answers as the deficit grew.

Fans continued clowning Swinney for sticking to his old-school approach to keep up with the evolving nature of college football.

“You can’t win in college football if you don’t embrace the era… LSU and Clemson approach it totally differently, and it’s showing,” LSU alum Ryan Clark wrote.

“Does Clemson have no money? Is it really just the no-portal? Was it all Venables and Tony Elliott?” former NFL scout John Middlekauff remarked.

“Two things are true. Lane Kiffin and LSU are flat-out dangerous and National Title Contenders. Dabo Swinney and Clemson are in a free fall and are getting left behind in this sport. Clemson needs to make a really difficult decision at the end of this season,” analyst Liam Blutman wrote.

“Early observations indicate Lane Kiffin has an explosive, talented LSU Football team. Don’t believe, just make a call to Dabo Swinney at Clemson. LSU putting the hurt on Clemson,” Dick Vitale noted.

Meanwhile, Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich reported that LSU had reached maximum capacity, with an announced attendance of 102,321.

Kiffin’s debut game ultimately ended not only in a statement win over a major opponent but also with Clemson facing serious questions about whether its longtime philosophy can keep pace with the rapidly changing college football landscape.
