Selena Gomez didn't forget her community on her wedding day.

PEOPLE previously confirmed that the Rare Beauty founder and her mega-producer husband, Benny Blanco, asked loved ones to donate to the Rare Impact Fund in place of traditional wedding gifts. While chatting with PEOPLE on Oct. 29 in Los Angeles at the Third Annual Rare Impact Fund Benefit: A Night of Radiance & Reflection, Gomez opened up about her sentimental reason behind incorporating donations into her star-studded nuptials.

"I think it’s not so much that Rare was a part of it, it's just so much that we wanted — I wanted — to share with my community a little piece of happy," she says. "They’ve changed my life, so that was my way of doing that."

Gomez, 33, has always been vocal about expanding access to mental health services and education.

On her 28th birthday five years ago, the Only Murders in the Building star announced the fund — which has raised over $20 million so far to provide mental health resources to 2 million young people around the world, before the 2020 launch of her beauty brand, Rare Beauty. The Rare Impact Fund's mission is to mobilize $100 million in contributions for youth mental health.

“Since the brand’s inception, we wanted to find a way to give back to our community and further support people who needed access to mental health services, which have had a profound impact on my life," Gomez said at the time.

At the Third Annual Rare Impact Fund Benefit, Gomez told PEOPLE that the fund "is the most proud" she's ever been of any project she's been involved in. "I'm just honored and stoked to see it come this far," she says.

In her speech on stage, the singer-actress also reflected on her wedding, which took place on Sept. 27 in Santa Barbara, California, and was attended by many A-list guests. Gomez gave Pinterest, one of her company's "top-tier sponsors," a shoutout, saying, "Hey, they helped me with my wedding."

Jimmy Kimmel also poked fun at the wedding during his speech, joking that he got Gomez and Blanco "a Vitamix" as a "wedding gift."
