Jameela Jamil explained to PEOPLE why Netflix’s People We Meet on Vacation is “what we need in the world right now”

People We Meet on Vacation premiered on Netflix on Jan. 9

Jameela Jamil is making a bold prediction to start the new year.

Speaking with PEOPLE in an exclusive conversation at the premiere of her latest project, People We Meet on Vacation, in Los Angeles on Jan. 6, the 39-year-old actress proclaimed that this Netflix film “is the comeback of the good rom-com” and discussed her love of the romantic-comedy genre.

“This film was some of the most fun I’ve ever had at my job. I love everyone involved,” Jamil said of her costars, including Tom Blyth and Emily Bader, who play traveling friends-to-lovers Alex and Poppy. “I love the story. I think it’s what we need in the world right now, given how bleak everything is.”

She added, “Emily and Tom are the perfect lovers on-screen. I’m obsessed with them, and I feel as though this is the comeback of the good rom-com.”

“I love the character I got to play,” the She-Hulk and The Good Place star said of her character — Poppy’s boss, Swapna — in People We Meet on Vacation. “We all need a Swapna in our lives.”

Jamil also elaborated on the state of rom-coms in general.

“I love the old rom-coms,” she said, before adding, “But I feel as though a lot of rom-coms [nowadays] sometimes get dumbed down, and that's not what we grew up with.”
