Jenna Bush Hager isnāt loving the example that Alix Earle is setting.
After the 25-year-old influencer recently told Interview Magazine during a Q&A, āIāve never read a book,ā saying that her last book was, āLike, maybe Dr. Seuss?ā
This didnāt sit well with Bush Hager, 44, the founder of the Read with Jenna book club and the Thousand Voices publishing imprint. On Thursday, Oct. 1, the talk show host and her co-host Sheinelle Jones discussed Earleās controversial comments on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle.

āI thought maybe she was just trying to be funny, or maybe you canāt think of anything so you just kind of make a joke out of it,ā Jones suggested. āThereās a responsibility with the platform and thereās so many young girls ā and boys ā who look up to her.ā
Making it clear that there was āno girl-on-girl crime,ā Bush Hager added, āAlix, youāve been on the show. We know that youāre smart ⦠You know what we want to do, we want to give you a little syllabus, Alix Earle.ā
True to form, the daughter of former President George W. Bush crafted a list of titles for the TikToker, starting off with some lighter reads.
āSince the last book she read was Dr. Seuss, letās start with mid-grade and letās read The Baby-Sitters Club,ā she said, holding up one of the popular chapter books with a grin. āWe know youāre an entrepreneur. She started her own brand. This talks about females getting together, starting a club, empowering each other, letās start there.ā
Bush Hager then suggested Judy Blumeās bestseller Are You There God? Itās Me, Margaret.
āNow, Alix, if you havenāt learned about sex, this might hit the ticket,ā Bush Hager quipped.

The former English teacher then scolded Earleās teachers saying, āIf you havenāt read this in 8th or 9th grade, shame on your teachers! Have you not read Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck?ā
Jones laughed at her co-hostās commentary, noting, āI feel like of all topics, this is the one that would set Jenna off.ā

āI know. Well, I was a 6th grade English teacher so therefore I know that sheās read a book,ā the mother of three said. āI just know that sheās read a book. I also have an 8th grader thatās reading Night by Elie Wiesel, sheās reading a ton.ā

Bush Hager then shared her entire reading list for Earle, which includes Ann Patchettās Bel Canto, Min Jin Leeās Pachinko, Suzanne Collinsā The Hunger Games series, Sandra Cisnerosā The House on Mango Street, John Greenās The Fault in Our Stars, Judy Blumeās Summer Sisters, Beverly Clearyās Beezus and Ramona and Toni Morrisonās The Bluest Eye.
āWeāve got anything for you, Alix,ā Bush Hager said. āCome here, sit on our show and we can teach you how to be a great reader. Come, and let me teach you how to read.ā
Bush Hager added, āAlso, we know Alix. Sheās been on our show multiple times. Sheās super smart, so thatās the disconnect. And itās cool to be smart and funny and all the things, and pretty!ā
Coincidentally, during a recent visit to the Today show, Earle discussed her biological connection to meteorologist Dylan Dreyer.

āWe joke that weāre family. I mean, weāre legit family. Weāre second cousins,ā Dreyer said.
Dreyerās father and Earleās father, Thomas āTJā Earle are first cousins, making the weather woman and the content creator first cousins once removed.
Earle seems to have having fun with the controversy. On Oct. 1, she took to TikTok posting a video of her nighttime routine, which included her reading a copy of Dr. Seussā Oh, the Places Youāll Go!
āThe best š¤ššā she captioned the clip.
