Kate Middleton made her first solo appearance of the year when she stepped out for the 2024 Wimbledon Tennis Championships amid her ongoing cancer treatment.
The Princess of Wales announced her diagnosis in March 2024 and made a rare public appearance for the tennis competition in July.
For the occasion, her purple dress was deeply rooted in symbolism.
Kate Middleton‘s attendance at the 2024 Wimbledon Tennis Championships in July was a moment of triumph for the royal amid her cancer treatment. She also used the outing—her first on her own after announcing her diagnosis in March of that year—as an opportunity to make multiple fashionable statements with her dress alone.
The month prior to Wimbledon, the Princess of Wales made her first public appearance of the year when she attended Trooping the Colour, King Charles‘s honorary birthday celebration. While she opted for a neutral color palette at the June event, Kate provided a pop of color in a vibrant purple midi-dress by Safiyaa when she arrived at the at the All England Lawn and Tennis Club on July 14.

Her dress was more than stylish, though. It also contained multiple references to the royal family, her situation at the time, and hope for the future.
“Kate has a history of choosing clever, whimsical themes for her Wimbledon looks, and this was a new one,” Bethan Holt, fashion director at the Daily Telegraph, shared with People. “Wearing purple underlines how important that role is to her and why she chose this event to make her second public appearance of the year.”
People noted that purple is one of the official colors of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, of which Kate is a patron. It’s also a color that Queen Elizabeth often wore when she attended the annual tennis tournament. Historically, purple has been associated with the royal family and Holt added that it may have been be significant to Kate’s health.
Holt explained that purple is “the color of courage,” adding that her choice “could be a nod to what she is going through.”
“I think she looked glowing and radiant, and it was lovely to see her looking so relaxed. I’m sure lots of people will have seen how happy she looked and taken reassurance from that. She really is a kind of beacon of hope for many but that also comes with a lot of pressure,” Holt said.

Holt speculated that simply seeing Kate at the tennis tournament likely offered the public some confirmation that she was doing well and that her treatments were progressing. Looking back nearly two years later, we know that is the case.

On January 14, 2025, Kate announced that she was in remission from cancer in a statement on Instagram, writing, “It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focussed on recovery.”
She continued, adding, “As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal. I am however looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead. There is much to look forward to. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.”
It wasn’t just the princess’ dress at Wimbledon that was meaningful that year. For the significant outing amid her treatment, Kate finished her look with a clutch from one of her favorite brands, LK Bennett, gold hoop earrings from By Pariah, and kitten-heel slingbacks with pearl details by Camilla Elphick. She added a purple-and-green ribbon known as a Committee bow, which she has worn previously when taking in games from the royal box.

Elphick told People that Kate’s look was reassuring to fans, since it was familiar thanks to its A-line silhouette. She also highlighted the royal’s styling, saying that her bouncy blowout and bright pink blush felt fresh and new.
“It was very much Kate’s princess uniform in a shape that really works for her, and it all felt very familiar,” Elphick said. “Although the earrings were a little edgier than usual, it was a really beautiful look.”
Wimbledon is a clearly a special event for Kate. She returned to the tournament in 2025, paying tribute to the players and their mandatory monochromatic white uniforms in a bright outfit of her own.
