Colorado Republican gubernatorial nominee Victor Marx is making headlines over a story from his past in which he claims he came face-to-face with Satan during an alleged exorcism at a Texas youth prison.

Resurfaced audio from a 2020 podcast, first highlighted by Talking Points Memo and reported by The Daily Beast, captures Marx describing the alleged incident while praying for girls at a youth prison in Texas.

ā€œHey, I’ve met the devil,ā€ Marx, 61, could be heard saying. ā€œI’ve met Satan in person, through a person.ā€

Marx said he asked the entity for its name. ā€œā€˜I am Satan,’ ā€ Marx recalled the entity saying. He added, ā€œIf you think I’m joking, I’m not.ā€

ā€œAll of a sudden this demon goes, ā€˜I guess you’re going to say I’m possessed.’ And I just — I just started laughing,ā€ Marx recounted. ā€œI was like, ā€˜I don’t think I have to. It’s kind of obvious.’ I mean, really, that’s — I just snickered, which makes the devil mad.ā€

ā€œI was like, ā€˜Well, whoever you are, you know, Christ, you got to come under the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ right now,’ ā€ Marx said. ā€œBecause, see, Satan, he’s not equal to God. He’s a created being. He’s a fallen angel, right?ā€

ā€œLong story longer, that girl did get delivered,ā€ he concluded.

Marx, founder of All Things Possible Ministries, a Christian organization focused on issues including trauma and child trafficking, has faced scrutiny over other extraordinary claims about his past.

Among them is his account that, as a young child, he was forced by an abusive stepfather to participate in a killing. Authorities told Colorado Public Radio that they have found no record supporting that account.

He has said that he may have been responsible for deaths while defending himself or working overseas and has claimed that, as a civilian, he ordered a U.S. airstrike that killed 70 ISIS fighters. When asked about the alleged airstrike by 9News reporter Kyle Clark, Marx declined to provide additional details.

His accounts of supernatural encounters are another featured aspect of his public persona. Marx has said in the past he ā€œhunts demonsā€ and performs prayer ā€œexorcisms,ā€ including alleged encounters involving public figures like the late Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.

The story is now resurfacing as Marx heads into the general election after narrowly winning Colorado’s Republican gubernatorial primary.

He will face Democratic nominee Phil Weiser, the state’s attorney general, in November. Marx celebrated his nomination by declaring, ā€œThe primary is over, the mission starts now.ā€
