Mina Starsiak Hawk tells PEOPLE her two kids are “very excited” to watch her compete on the upcoming season of Rock the Block

The HGTV star shares son Jack, 7, and daughter Charlie, 5, with husband Steve Hawk

The mom of two previously starred on the home renovation series Good Bones for eight seasons until 2023

Mina Starsiak Hawk’s two children are eager for her return to HGTV on the new season of Rock the Block.

The renovation expert tells PEOPLE that her son Jack, 7, and daughter Charlie, 5, whom she shares with husband Steve Hawk, are “very excited” to watch the show, which is slated to air in early 2026.

Mina, who spent eight seasons renovating Indianapolis homes on the beloved series Good Bones, joins the design competition for its latest installment, which features four duos working to transform identical Las Vegas properties.

The kids "came out and visited and they got to see the house and the set and they very much missed like, ‘Mom, when are you going to build houses again on TV? The cameras aren't around anymore. When are we going to do that again?’” she says.

“They really enjoyed it,” she adds.

Mina teams up with retired NFL player turned actor Vernon Davis on Rock the Block’s seventh season, which, for the first time sees HGTV stars team up with celebrities “who share a passion for design."

The three other teams include Renovation Resort Showdown’s Scott McGillivray and singer and reality star Brooke Hogan (daughter of the late Hulk Hogan); Battle on the Beach’s Taniya Nayak and 98 Degrees singer Drew Lachey; and Why the Heck Did I Buy This House? host Kim Wolfe and fellow Survivor alum and former Southern Charm star Chelsea Meissner.

“There was so much shenanigans because we all had so much fun with each other,” Mina says, noting that the antics occurred both between partners and “the teams just messing with each other.”

“And there's several instances where Vernon [Davis], my partner, who's a giant ex NFL player, would just physically move someone that he didn't want where they were,” she adds. Just always messing with each other and playing around. And I'm pretty sure Brooke [Hogan] got a couple solid tackles of Vernon because she's a tall lady as well.”

Mina says the new Rock the Block cast is “such an eclectic group.”

When she found out Davis would be her partner, she was confident about working with the athlete, who played 15 seasons in the NFL as a tight end.

“Knowing that he was a football player, knowing his position and when he played in the league, I was like, no matter what, he's going to be a good teammate,” she recalls. “You just aren't the kind of person that thinks you can do it all by yourself if you're successful in the NFL for that long the way he was. So I knew that was going to be great.”

Mina, who previously appeared on season 6 of Rock the Block as a judge, says the biggest challenge of joining the show as a competitor this time around was her tendency for “getting in my head.”

“Every decision I make, I also reflect on if I was a judge, this is what I would say about this,” she explains. “Or the thing that goes wrong that I don't have the budget or time to fix — if I was a judge, this is what I would say and this is why I would dock you and you wouldn't win.”

She adds, “So while it's definitely I think a bit of an edge to have both perspectives, it also was just mental gymnastics all the time.”

The HGTV star wrapped the original eight-season run of Good Bones, in which she worked alongside her mom, Karen E. Laine, in October 2023.

Following the show’s conclusion, a three-episode spinoff of Good Bones premiered in August 2024. The limited series focused on "new beginnings" for the mother and daughter as they took on separate projects in different states.
