Bloom found exploring Jane’s mysterious origins surprising and still has questions about her character’s journey, she says

Warning: Spoilers for Paradise season 2, now streaming on Hulu, ahead.

Fate seemed determined to ensure Jane Driscoll (Nicole Brydon Bloom) would become a killer from the start.

In the sixth episode of Paradise season 2, aptly titled "Jane," the show finally gave viewers insight into how the secret agent became a ruthless killer. Before she was even born, a man is sent a message seemingly directing him to kill baby Jane, which he relays to her mother. This appears to reinforce her mother's hatred of her, which culminates in a young Jane being locked in a sauna (after she locked her mother and mother's boyfriend in first).

Bloom, 31, tells PEOPLE she wasn't sure if she wanted Jane's backstory to "humanize" her character or not. But she thinks the writers did a good job maintaining the mystery around what makes her character tick.

"Getting to explore her past was really interesting," Bloom says. "I think part of me was hoping it would humanize her, and then the other part of me was kind of hoping to allow her to just become more dangerous, and I think, in a way, it sort of achieved both."

She adds, "I think there's nothing scarier than someone who's highly skilled and unpredictable."

If anything, Jane's backstory raised more questions than it gave answers, leaving the message received by the Circuit City employee a mystery, at least for now. Even Bloom admits she doesn't completely understand Jane journey from unloved child to dangerous assassin.

She also says she was "surprised" by Jane's origins, adding, "I mean I had been told that they were working on a backstory that would kind of explain how and why she became a psychopath. I think I still have questions in the midst of a lot of answers, but, yes, I was surprised."

Bloom adds, "I was so thrilled reading the script and sort of trying to understand where [series creator] Dan [Fogelman] and the writers believed Jane was coming from and having that make sense with what I had kind of worked with previously."

Bloom also confirms that despite shooting Sinatra (Julianne Nicholson) at the end of season 1, Jane has come to see her as a mother figure whose approval she craves.

"Suddenly the power dynamic is unclear and Sinatra knows she's at risk with Jane," she explains. "And I think Jane knows that and enjoys that, but at the same time begins to feel accepted by Sinatra as the season goes on and suddenly realizes that she craves that and wants her approval and wants to be her right-hand woman."

Bloom says, "It was fascinating to get to work so closely with Julianne this season. We had a few scenes together in the first season, but this one really allowed us to kind of sink into one another. And that was fascinating just as an actor watching her work, but also as Jane sort of studying this woman who she wants to please and wants to feel loved by."
