Prince George, 12, will start at a new school in September

Kate Middleton and Prince William have announced their eldest child will go to Eton College, just like his father

The decision follows tradition after much speculation that George could attend a coed school rather than the all-boys Eton College

Prince George is following royal tradition when it comes to his education.

George, who will turn 13 in July, is set to attend Eton College in the fall, following in Prince William's footsteps.

"Kensington Palace can confirm that Prince George will attend Eton College from this September," a spokesperson told PEOPLE on Tuesday, June 16.

The announcement ends a period of speculation as Prince William and Kate Middleton explored a variety of options for where their eldest would continue his education.

Much of that intrigue included talk of him going to Princess Kate's alma mater, the coed Marlborough College, which would have opened up the prospect of his two younger siblings — Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7 — both following him there.

Another report, however, quoted an insider saying, "All roads lead to Eton."

The trio of royal siblings was all attending Lambrook School in Ascot, near their home at Forest Lodge in Windsor, where they started a day before the late Queen Elizabeth died in Sept. 2022.

Before that, George and Charlotte were both educated alongside each other at Thomas's Battersea in London.

George started his schooling at a Montessori preschool in Norfolk when the couple lived mostly at Anmer Hall, their home on the royal family's Sandringham estate.

Eton, one of the oldest and most renowned secondary schools in England, enrolls 1,350 students who reside in 25 different boarding houses, and it's where both William and Prince Harry attended as teenagers.

Although it's a boarding school, Eton is just a short drive from the family's Forest Lodge home in Windsor. William famously made his way to Windsor Castle while attending school there for Sunday lunches with his grandmother Queen Elizabeth.
