As with all major holidays, the royal family has been known to celebrate Easter in a far more public way than most people might. And this year was no exception—except for Princess Kate and Prince William.
Today, King Charles III and Queen Camilla started the weekend by attending the Royal Maundy Service at St. Asaph Cathedral in North Wales. The occasion proved a continuation of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s tradition of taking the event to a different United Kingdom city or town each year, and marked the second time in history that the royals celebrated it in Wales. (The last was in 1982.) However, despite the milestone, the Prince and Princess of Wales themselves were notably absent.

For the past two years, Kate and William have chosen to celebrate the holiday privately with their children, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7. The children have attended Easter functions in the past, however, with George and Charlotte making their Easter debuts in 2022 at a Sunday service at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle and Louis joining the family the following year.
Ahead of the celebration, the official Instagram account of the royal family looked back at the “centuries‑old tradition” of the Royal Maundy service. They shared photographs of Charles and Camilla throughout the years, as well as older images of the late queen, Prince Philip, and Queen Mother partaking in the festivities.
“Dating back to 600AD, every year on the Thursday before Easter, The Sovereign presents Maundy Money to people who’ve made an outstanding contribution to their communities,” the post explained.
