Regé-Jean Page and Halle Bailey had the most star-studded first meeting, the You, Me & Tuscany leads tell PEOPLE

The pair met at the 2025 Met Gala, about one week after the film was announced

"It's a pretty magical meet-cute. You can't ask for much more than [that]," Page says

Regé-Jean Page and Halle Bailey's first meeting was the stuff of fairytales.

At a special screening of their forthcoming rom-com, You, Me & Tuscany, Page and Bailey set the scene of their star-studded first meeting: the Met Gala. Though surrounded by celebrities and famous faces galore, the Bridgerton alum and The Little Mermaid star still found each other in the crowd, they tell PEOPLE, and enjoyed a wholesome night.

Page says he first crossed paths with his costar at the 2025 Met Gala, an especially dazzling but loaded and surprisingly lonely atmosphere.

"That room is already very intimidating," Bailey recalls. "You go in there — you look to your left, you see Beyoncé. Look to your right, [you] see all these stars."

"What they folks don't tell you about the Met is most folks go on their own," Page adds. "So you have the world's most glamorous people all isolated, looking for a friend."

That friend, for Page, was Bailey. He recalls looking across the room and seeing her, "shining" in "the most glamorous diamond-studded outfit," and described her as a "beacon" in the sea of people.

Bailey told PEOPLE in November 2025, "I remember I saw him. You were wearing like all red. It's very weird 'cause you're nervous and you're like, 'Oh, if I go up to this person, are they gonna be nice?' And then I'm like, we're doing a movie together, I'm gonna just go up."

You, Me & Tuscany had been announced about one week before the ball, Page says. And while he anticipated "maybe" sending his costar a DM to make an introduction, the Met Gala had seemingly provided them a better opportunity to connect.

"It's a pretty magical meet-cute. You can't ask for much more than [that]," Page says.

The glitzy event even provided the "ultimate icebreaker," Bailey says: watching Stevie Wonder and Usher perform. And after getting to know each other at the Met Gala, they were off to Italy to begin filming — which Bailey says was "even more fun."

You, Me & Tuscany stars Bailey as Anna, who's squatting in an abandoned Tuscan villa, and Page's Michael, who is cousin to said villa's homeowner. The unique situation quells an "unexpected romance that may transform [Anna's] life," the synopsis reads.

The new rom-com is set to debut in theaters on April 10, 2026.
