Saquon Barkley is partnering with the American Red Cross to encourage fans to donate blood this month, National Blood Month

Barkley tells PEOPLE he's "always trying to show and teach my kids how to be better and help others"

The Eagles star says he's also encouraging his teammates in Philadelphia to "be a champion on and off the field" by donating blood

Saquon Barkley wants his kids to know the importance of helping others.

The Philadelphia Eagles star, 28, tells PEOPLE he wants to "be a champion on and off the field" as he teams up with the American Red Cross to remind fans and his loved ones that January is National Blood Month.

“I’m always trying to show and teach my kids how to be better and how to help others, so this has been a prime example of that," Barkley says of his campaign with the Red Cross. "Daddy donated blood and helped save a life."

The Super Bowl champion and fiancée Anna Congdon share two children: daughter Jada, 7, and Saquon Jr., 3.

Barkley says he's also encouraging his Eagles teammates to get on board. "I’ve been talking to the guys about it, and some have newly donated while others have been an ongoing donor," he shares. "It’s wild because only 3 out of 100 American donate blood so we need to make a difference and be the change.”

Before partnering with the Red Cross, Barkley donated blood "once in college and that was the only time I had ever been asked to give until the Red Cross reached out recently."

"Both times it's been a no-brainer," he adds. "When you realize how giving blood can make an impact on in a person's life, especially someone with cancer – that really hits home for me. And to know my most recent donation went to a cancer patient right here in Philadelphia — it's a beautiful thing.”

Barkley and his Eagles teammates wrapped up the regular season last weekend, and get their first shot at returning to the Super Bowl on Sunday when they face the San Francisco 49ers in the Wild Card Round. If they can win that game and their next two, they'll punch their ticket to Super Bowl LX and a chance to repeat as champions.

Fans who donate blood will also have the chance to win a ticket to Super Bowl LX courtesy of Barkley and the Red Cross.

Last year, Barkley became a Super Bowl champion on the same day that he turned 28, and told PEOPLE before the big game that it was "the best birthday gift."

He then seemingly foretold his future, adding: "The only thing better than that is winning the Super Bowl on your birthday."
