The Boston Celtics have reportedly solved their big man depth problem in a fairly impactful way per new reporting from ESPN senior reporter Shams Charania. Per the ESPN contributor, the Celtics have agreed to terms with former New York Knicks big man Mitchell Robinson on a three-year, $47.4 million deal with a player option in third season.
The move comes amid the Celtics front office looking for a way to resolve their situation with Jaylen Brown via a trade or perhaps a potential return, and is a welcome reprieve for fans who have seen the rest of the NBA making moves as Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens appeared to be standing still. But standing still they were not as this move demonstrates, a signing of perhaps the best available big man on the free agency market without a restricted tag.
Last season with the Knicks, he was a key part of New York winning its first title in over a half-century in a mostly bench role as a 7-foot, 240-lb. defensive anchor who was among the best rebounders in the NBA.
Heading into his age 28 season with Boston, Robinson is coming off a campaign that saw him log 5.7 points, 8.8 rebounds, just under an assist, and 1.2 blocks per game. He also shot 72.3 percent from the field overall, did not attempt shots from beyond the arc, and a concerning, if well-known level of efficiency from the free throw line at 40.8 percent.
More likely than not, he will continue coming off the bench, but will also serve as a trustworthy postseason option for nights when starting Boston big man Neemias Queta struggles.
