- Simon Helberg is looking back on the 'strange, macabre version' of the *Big Bang Theory *pilot which never aired.
- "Jim [Parsons] was like a womanizer, very strange," Helberg shared on Jesse Tyler Ferguson's *Dinner's On Me *podcast.
- Helberg speculated that the original design for the priggish Sheldon Cooper may have been borrowed from Barney Stinson, the *How I Met Your Mother *character Parsons originally auditioned for.
*The* *Big Bang Theory** *is already playing with alternate realities, so imagine this one: Sheldon is a beer-drinking jerk, Penny is cruel to her friends, and Howard doesn't even exist. It sounds unbelievable, but it almost happened.
Simon Helberg, who played the cringey aerospace engineer Howard Wolowitz across all 12 seasons, took fans through the looking glass into the sitcom that also was during his appearance on Tuesday's episode of the *Dinner's on Me* podcast.
"I remember when I got *Big Bang*, I went over to say hi to Jim Burrows, because I knew he had seen my tape, but I'd never met him," he told host Jesse Tyler Ferguson. "I was very nervous about it, and I went up to him and said like, 'Hey Jim, I'm Simon. I think you just hired me for the *Big Bang* pilot, and he just looked at me and was like, 'Oh, hang on to your hat, I work fast.' I walked away. I think that was the most I've ever said to him."
Burrows directed the memorable pilot of the CalTech-set sitcom, but as Ferguson then pointed out, Burrows actually filmed *two *pilots, because the first never made it to air.

Jim Parsons and Simon Helberg on 'The Big Bang Theory'.
"Well, they reshot the pilot. So the pilot I was in was the reshot one. They shot a very strange, macabre version of it, where [Jim Parsons' Sheldon Cooper] was like a womanizer. Very strange," Helberg explained. "Like a guy drinking beer — kind of like the Neil Patrick Harris character, I think. Very different."
*The Big Bang Theory *that fans know and love revolves around five characters: the priggish Sheldon; his roommate, Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki); their neighbor, Penny (Kaley Cuoco); and their friends, Helberg's Howard and Raj Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar).
All the pieces that formed the core of the series that did not budge for 12 seasons are there in the pilot that did air. But in the pilot that did not, which is available to watch on YouTube, Howard and Raj are entirely absent, Penny is instead a cruel character named Katie, played by Amanda Walsh, and Sheldon is indeed much closer to *How I Met Your Mother*'s Barney Stinson, which Harris played but Parsons originally auditioned for.

"The Penny character was someone completely different... dark haired and gothy," Helberg continued.
*The Big Bang Theory *co-creators, Bill Prady and Chuck Lorre, looked back on the sitcom's sliding doors pilot with * *in 2022, as the show turned 15.
"In the first pilot, the female character (who, at that point, was named Katie) is kind of rough. She's dangerous in a way and wasn't very nice to the guys. I remember going to the test screening, the dial testing," Prady said, and Lorre remarked, "The audience hated her."
"They *hated* her," Prady continued, "but what was amazing was that they were defending Leonard and Sheldon so much."

The TV moguls praised Walsh for doing "a great job playing that character," but noted that "the audience didn't want a toxic presence around [Leonard and Sheldon]. That's why we rewrote Katie to become Penny and made her much more charmed by the guys and kind to them, as opposed to a woman who would take advantage of them."
But they got the rare opportunity to try again, which Lorre described as a "miracle."
"I told Bill, 'Let's add more of these brilliant misbegotten characters, and let's lose the plot entirely. Let's just spend a half hour diving into the lives of these brilliant misfit characters," he said.
