Multiple reports indicate The Conjuring franchise will receive a new prequel movie after the latest installment Last Rites set global box office records
"Far as we know, there’s nothing else that they want from us," Vera Farmiga told PEOPLE of her and Patrick Wilson's future with the horror series in September
Variety reported that the series will also be adapted for an HBO show that will continue the storyline from the movies
Horror fans can rest assured The Conjuring franchise is not going away quite yet.
On Wednesday, Oct. 29, The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit reported on X that Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema are putting a prequel to Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga's horror series into development. On Thursday, Oct. 30, Variety followed up THR's reporting; according to both outlets, director Rodrigue Huart is in talks to helm the movie.
PEOPLE has reached out to Warner Bros. for comment.
Screenwriters Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, who cowrote The Conjuring franchise installments The Nun II and this year's The Conjuring: Last Rites, will write the new prequel's screenplay, according to Variety.
It remains unclear whether Farmiga and Wilson, both 52, will reprise their roles as Lorraine and Ed Warren in the new movie, especially after Last Rites was advertised as the final chapter in the couples' paranormal investigations. According to the outlet, the new movie will likely feature the couple's "early years" and will see new actors portray the real-life duo. (Ed died in 2006 at 79 and Lorraine died in 2019 at 92. The famous investigators are survived by their daughter, Judy Spera.)

'The Conjuring: Last Rites'
Last Rites set a new global box office record for a horror movie's opening weekend when it released in September. The film made $194 million worldwide during its first three days of release, and beat out the 2017 adaptation of Stephen King's It to hit that mark; in total, Last Rites has grossed $487 million across the world, per Box Office Mojo.
When Farmiga and Wilson spoke with PEOPLE ahead of Last Rites' release, Wilson confessed the pair had "no idea what they want to do after this," regarding the studios' intentions for the franchise's future.
"Far as we know, there’s nothing else that they want from us," Farmiga added at that time. "The Warrens have reached the end of the road."
