Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s wardrobe is once again dominating fashion conversations thanks to Ryan Murphy’s FX series Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette. But for those within the industry, the fascination with the icon’s minimalist style is hardly new.

Long before the current resurgence of ’90s nostalgia and discourse about “quiet luxury,” Bessette Kennedy had already secured a place in fashion history—thanks in part to the dress Narciso Rodriguez designed for her 1996 wedding to John F. Kennedy Jr. The designer, who worked alongside her during their Calvin Klein years, reflected on her distinct style in a March 2025 interview with ELLE.

Rodriguez said Bessette Kennedy’s appeal came from the fact that her approach to dressing never appeared calculated.

“Her style was never a production,” he told ELLE. “It was just something innate. Even when she wore the most complicated Yohji [Yamamoto] piece, it was natural. So often you see people on a red carpet and you wonder, ‘Who convinced them of that? How uncomfortable do they look?’ It doesn’t fit their personality.”

“I know it’s a business, and everyone’s getting paid and courted and gifted and flown, and the stylists are now celebrities, and they’re getting flown in and paid off. It’s the antithesis of what good style is,” he added.

Today, Bessette Kennedy’s restrained wardrobe—defined by neutral palettes, clean silhouettes, and an absence of visible branding—continues to resonate with a generation of designers and everyday shoppers focused on minimalism. Her influence echoes through brands that champion understated luxury, including The Row and Toteme.

The renewed attention surrounding Love Story has only amplified that legacy. Actress Sarah Pidgeon portrays Bessette Kennedy in the FX series, which chronicles her relationship with John F. Kennedy Jr. throughout the 1990s.

Yet for many fashion insiders, Bessette Kennedy’s significance has always extended beyond the renewed pop culture spotlight. The slip dress Rodriguez created for her wedding, styled with a transparent veil and long gloves, remains one of the defining bridal looks of its era, a design frequently referenced whenever discussions of minimalist fashion resurface.
