Josh Sargent has completed a move to Toronto FC from Norwich City, finally ending a protracted transfer saga.

The U.S. men's national team striker joins the MLS side for an initial fee of $22 million, which could go as high as $27m with add-ons per The Athletic.

The fee ties Sargent with Atlanta United's Emmanuel Latte Lath for the second-largest incoming transfer in MLS history, only trailing LAFC star Son Heung-min ($26.5m).

Sargent will be a Designated Player and signed a deal with the Canadian side through the 2030-31 season.

“I am excited to join Toronto FC and start a new chapter in my life with my family in Toronto,” said Sargent. “I am grateful to everyone at the club for their belief in me and all the support throughout the process to make this move possible.

"From the initial conversations with Toronto FC, what excited me the most about the project was the ambition to be a competitive and winning team. I can’t wait to hit the ground running and play in front of all the fans at BMO Field.”

Sargent has not played for Norwich in more than a month after he was banished to the reserves amid a push to join Toronto FC.

The 25-year-old asked to be left out of a Jan. 11 FA Cup match against Walsall after TFC made a transfer offer.

In the wake of the match against Walsall, Norwich head coach Philippe Clement said: "What [Sargent] did was not acceptable for anybody in the club."

Norwich has maintained that the striker is not for sale, but the Championship side has now relented.

“Regardless of the manner of his departure, Josh has been a significant part of the club's recent story, contributing greatly and captaining the team on many occasions. He now moves on and we wish him well for his next step, and for his future beyond," said Norwich sporting director Ben Knapper.

Sargent originally joined the Canaries 2021, featuring in both the Premier League and Championship. The striker has scored 56 goals in 157 appearances across all competitions for the club.

The St. Louis native returns to North America, where he has never played professionally. Prior to his time at Norwich, Sargent played three seasons with Werder Bremen in Germany after signing as an 18-year-old.

Sargent has earned 29 caps with the USMNT, scoring five goals. He hasn't found the net on the international level since 2019, which has damaged his chances of making a second straight World Cup roster.
