Hadestown is coming to the big screen!
PEOPLE has the first look at the live capture of the hit Broadway musical that premieres in theaters later this month. The clip includes a sneak peek at the behind-the-scenes process of the show, as well as interviews with cast members Eva Noblezada, Reeve Carney and more.
Hadestown: The Musical was filmed last year when five of the original Broadway cast reprised their roles for a limited engagement during the show’s West End run at the Lyric Theatre in London.
The musical, written by Anaïs Mitchell and directed by Rachel Chavkin, reimagines two ancient Greek myths to tell the tragic love stories of Orpheus and Eurydice and Hades and Persephone.
Carney stars as Orpheus with Noblezada as Eurydice, Patrick Page as Hades, Amber Gray as Persephone and André De Shields as Hermes.
“People tend to know the myth of Orpheus but they don't know the depth in which Hadestown explores all of these incredible characters,” Carney teases in the exclusive clip.
As the story unfolds, Orpheus finds himself on a journey to rescue Eurydice from the Underworld, which is under Hades' rule.
“Orpheus is told he may take Eurydice out of Hades on the condition that he not turn around to look at her,” Chavkin teases of the conflict.
Looking back, the director reveals that she was drawn to the musical while listening to the concept album and hearing the song “Wait for Me.”

“I got this image of swinging lamps that surge with the chorus,” she adds.

As for what makes the proshot special, Gray mentions that it’ll “give access to all the people who are unable to go into a live theatrical space, where it's playing.”
“You can feel the heat that’s generated from the characters,” De Shields says of the live recording. Mitchell also speaks to the immersive experience, saying, “You can hear people breathing, you can hear people dancing, you can hear the audience responding in real time to what's going on in the story.”
“This was a one-time world event," Page adds. "The electricity between the actors and the stage had never happened before. And it can never happen again."

The proshot was directed by Brett Sullivan and produced by Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold and Tom Kirdahy. It made its world premiere June 8 at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Hadestown premiered on Broadway in 2019 at the Walter Kerr Theatre in New York City, where it is currently playing. The production won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. The show later opened in the West End in 2024, where it is also currently playing. There have been additional productions throughout the world, such as South Korea and Australia.
“All I’ve Ever Known", “Wait for Me” and “Our Lady of the Underground" are among the jazz-inspired hits featured in the musical.
Carney and Noblezada met while playing the star-crossed lovers in the show and are now married in real life.
Hadestown: The Musical hits theaters for five nights only starting July 24.
