As streaming services race to acquire the biggest and best horror films and TV series, the streaming wars have become the screaming wars. But which service has the best content for horror buffs? It depends on what kind of fan you are. Do you fancy yourself a slasher-film final girl? Do you bow to a xenomorph queen? Are you ready to move into Hill House or Bly Manor? Or are you looking for cheap thrills? Below, for your consideration, are six streaming services ready to scare the subscription dollars out of you — and one that doesn’t cost a nickel.

Best for modern horror fans: HBO Max

If there’s a horror movie you’ve seen hype about in the last decade, there’s a good chance you’ll find it on HBO Max. It, Hereditary, Midsommar, Us, The Substance, Weapons, and Sinners, which earned a record 16 Oscar nominations this year — they’re all here. You can even watch Tom Cruise’s The Mummy or Lee Cronin’s The Mummy.

Best for slasher flicks: Paramount+

Jason Voorhees lives! On Paramount+, to be exact, since the streamer hosts the first eight Friday the 13th films. And speaking of masked serial killers, Ghostface’s reign of terror continues on Paramount+, which offers all seven Scream films. And slasher parodies are abundant on the streamer, too, with all six Scary Movie films available.

Best for original TV series: Shudder

Shudder’s slate of original programming — including the scripted TV series Deadwax, Creepshow, The Creep Tapes, and Hell Motel — should give you the shivers. Plus, Shudder is home to unscripted gems like the docuseries Queer for Fear: The History of Queer Horror and the reality competitions The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula and Guts & Glory.

Best for B-movies: Screambox

Screambox bills itself as “a curated horror streaming destination built for true genre fans.” And with self-aware low-budget productions like the films 2-Headed Shark Attack, Army of Frankensteins, and Cocaine Crabs From Outer Space, it’s a scream for horror fans who live for the shlock.

Best for free thrills: Tubi

If you don’t mind the occasional ad break, Tubi offers tons of horror fare for the nice price. And free doesn’t mean low-quality, either. The Tubi library includes seminal horror (The Evil Dead, Hellraiser), modern classics (The Lost Boys, Interview With the Vampire), and recent favorites (Insidious, The Witch).

Best for Flanaverse residents: Netflix

Until Mike Flanagan’s Carrie adaptation hits Prime Video, Netflix is the destination for the filmmaker’s followers, as the home of his horror TV shows The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, and The Fall of the House of Usher. As a bonus, Netflix also streams his films Before I Wake, Ouija: Origin of Evil, and Gerald’s Game.

Best for Alien fans: Hulu

In space, no one can hear you scream, but in your living room, everyone can. Hulu carries the recent film Alien: Romulus and the ongoing TV series Alien: Earth. And Hulu subscribers who pony up for the Live TV and HBO Max add-ons can also access every other film in the franchise: Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Alien Resurrection, Prometheus, and Alien: Covenant.
