The Grey’s Anatomy universe is once again expanding.

In May 2026, news broke that ABC had greenlit an untitled spinoff series from series creator Shonda Rhimes and current showrunner Meg Marinis. Though they’ve kept most details hush-hush, Marinis confirmed that the new drama will be set in West Texas.

“It’s related to Grey’s,” she told The Hollywood Reporter in October 2026. “But its stories are going to be different.”

Here’s what we know so far about the new Grey’s Anatomy spinoff, including what its co-creators have said about a potential crossover with the long-running original series.

Though ABC hasn’t released an official title and logline for the new Grey’s Anatomy spinoff, Marinis told The Hollywood Reporter that she’s always wanted to explore “what’s happening in medical deserts,” and “the disparity between people who can afford excellent healthcare and the people who can’t.”

“We’re digging into the actual communities and true stories of what happens out in rural West Texas,” she continued. “There’s so much going on there that I haven’t seen on TV. I’m thrilled to be able to dive into that world. It’s so different from Grey’s.”

The new series marks a departure from previous spinoffs, which maintained closer ties to the original show. Private Practice followed Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) after she left Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital for a job in Los Angeles, and Station 19 centered on a team of Seattle firefighters whose lives frequently intersected with Grey’s Anatomy doctors.

Will any Grey’s Anatomy characters appear in the spinoff?

Yes! In an October 2026 interview with Deadline, Marinis confirmed that fans will see a few familiar faces in the new show — she just wasn’t sure who or when.

“We’re still figuring out which episode, but yeah, just, traditionally with a spinoff [that’s done],” she said. “We’re still working out on timing.”

The cast of the new Grey’s Anatomy spinoff has not yet been announced. However, one original star has already attached her name to the project: Ellen Pompeo.

Along with Rhimes and Marinis, Pompeo will serve as an executive producer.

In 2022, the actress transitioned to a more scaled-back role as Meredith Grey in season 19, though she has continued to make guest appearances and provide narration for the series.

When will the new Grey’s Anatomy spinoff premiere?

ABC hasn’t confirmed a release date for its new Grey’s Anatomy spinoff.

According to Deadline, the series is expected to premiere during the midseason window in early 2027.

In October 2026, Marinis told The Hollywood Reporter that the creative team was still working out the new show’s airing schedule and considering whether to introduce the spinoff through an episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

“We have thoughts based on airing schedule and things like that, but we’re still working it out,” she said. “Also because there are so many things going on on Grey’s, I want to make sure to do it where it’s servicing both shows equally.”
