*Scrubs* returned to ABC in February 2026 after roughly 16 years off the air, with stars Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, and Judy Reyes mentoring a new batch of quirky, heartsick interns at the show's fictional Sacred Heart Hospital. While *technically* the show's 10th season, this new batch of episodes has also been described as "season 1" of a "revival" series.

No matter what season you want to call it, the revival upheld the series' signature blend of reality-bending slapstick and sweet sentimentality, while also denying J.D. (Braff) and Elliot (Chalke) the happy ending we all believed they'd gotten. It also danced on the edge of tragedy with a story that finds the abrasive Dr. Perry Cox (John C. McGinley) battling a potentially fatal autoimmune disease.

The last of its nine episodes left several plot threads dangling, and fans are curious if the revival was a one-and-done or if the crew at Sacred Heart will return to save more lives. Here's everything we know about the potential new season of *Scrubs. *

Will there be a new season of Scrubs?

As of this writing, ABC has yet to confirm a new season of *Scrubs*, but there's plenty of reasons to think the series will return.

First of all, the revival debuted with a whopping 11.3 million cross-platform viewers, making it ABC's top debut on streaming in more than a year.

Also, showrunner Aseem Batra and several members of the cast, including executive producer Braff, have spoken about their desire for a follow-up season. "[If] we are lucky enough to get a season 2, that’s something we want to do," Braff told *Esquire* ahead of the premiere.

It's also worth noting that the season finale doesn't feel at all like a conclusion. If anything, the story seems like it's just getting started.

In the season's penultimate episode, Cox passes out while visiting Sacred Heart and is diagnosed with microscopic polyangiitis, an autoimmune disease. Despite Cox's stubborn resistance, J.D. is eager to help treat his old mentor. But in the finale, it's revealed that the treatment isn't working as they'd hoped.

Cox is obviously scared, but he spends the finale fretting over how he'll break the news to Jordan (Christa Miller). "I need to be strong and invulnerable for her, and you should understand that," he tells J.D. "It's the same thing you always wanted me to be for you."

The truth is eventually revealed, with Christa calling B.S. on Cox's put-on bravado.

“If it helps, I've always seen you as a whiny baby man," she replies. "Why don’t you let me be the strong one for once?"**

Elsewhere in the episode, J.D. meets-cute with a visitor played by *The O.C.*'s Rachel Bilson, with whom the actor previously starred with in the 2006 film *The Last Kiss*. Also, the interns overcome burnout by helping ensure a patient in need of a pacemaker is able to see his daughter get married.**

Batra, the showrunner, has teased numerous stories she'd like to pursue if *Scrubs* is renewed for another season.

Further exploring the doctor-patient dynamic between J.D. and Cox is at the top of the list. “What’s exciting about it is that you see him make that connection with the mentor he wanted, and the roles flip a little bit, too, so that’s such a rich area for us to write to,” Batra recently told Decider.

She also noted that the romantic entanglements of the interns offer more opportunities for story. In the finale, for example, Tosh (Ava Bunn) confesses her feelings for shy Asher (Jacob Dudman), which may cause ripples among some of the other interns, including Amara (Layla Mohammadi) and Blake (David Gridley).

“We have been calling it kind of the love square because it’s kind of like we don’t know how that romance is going to shake out, but it’s a lot of people looking at other people, wondering like, ‘Who here is right for me?'” Batra told Decider. “We wanted to get a little Gen Z messy with it. That’s what our inspiration was.”

And then there's J.D.'s budding romance with Bilson's Charlie. After a season in which J.D. was still licking the wounds of his divorce from Elliot, Batra is eager to see J.D. back in the dating pool.

“J.D. is in a whole second chapter of his romantic life, and he’s bringing baggage into it," she told *The Hollywood Reporter*. "He’s got a kid, and it’s exploring what dating is for him now that he’s this age, how he’s changed and what he’s learned, and what it will kick up for him and Elliot.”

As evidenced by Batra's remarks about a potential season 2, the showrunner sees a place for many of the current characters in *Scrubs*' future. That includes Bilson's Charlie, who Batra acknowledged barely got a chance to flaunt her chops in the finale.

“We told her, ‘We’re sorry,'” Batra revealed to THR. “All she got to do, really, is walk past scenes and have J.D. see her, but not make contact. We promise we’ll have something more fun than that [next season]. But she was a sport and knew that it was setting up something to come. So we’re excited to flesh that out.”**

Batra said she'd also like to bring Miller's Jordan, a highlight of the early seasons that appeared only in the finale of the revival, back into the fold. “I talked to [Miller] as she came in for an ADR session, and she said, and I’m gonna hold her to it, that she’d like to do more,” she said. “I think if we can get her up there for more and she wants to do more, we would love that, because she has been a fan favorite and has such fun energy. It’s fun watching her just fall back into Jordan."**
