Music certainly has some special powers for Wynonna Judd and her husband Cactus Moser.
The country star, 62, tells PEOPLE in this weekās cover story that working on her deeply personal new album The Hard Truth (out Oct. 2) with Moser helped the pair find a new spark after 14 years of marriage.
āI think we fell in love with each other all over again because we had so many subjects that were so real that it forced us to go out on date night and talk about it. Communication is everything to me, and that album has brought us together in a way thatās so intimate here,ā she says, pointing to her head. āMarriage is about more than just the physical, and so bonding through that music was so sacred.ā
Judd and Moser, 69, cowrote nine of the albumās 10 tracks together, and he produced the record. Though they married in 2012, their friendship goes back decades, and the singer says that having trust in someone the way she does in Moser is invaluable to her creativity.

For one, she struggles with being a perfectionist. But the encouragement she gets from Moser ā with whom she is raising her 4-year-old granddaughter Kaliyah ā helped her through.
āIām always struggling through the insecurity of, āOh gosh, I could have done that better,āā Judd says. āAnd he would say, āAbsolutely not. Thatās the most intimate Iāve heard you sing it. Weāre going to leave it alone.ā ... We have a partnership that is just glorious.ā

Judd describes her new record as āraw and real,ā and the album covers everything from visiting her daughter Grace in jail to her late mother, Naomi Judd.
āI feel an awful lot like Iām walking this really thin line that you can only get away with once in your lifetime. And itās because Iām older,ā she says. āIām just starting to really come into myself in a way that Iāve never felt before. I just feel this honesty coming that helps me to propel into the next day. I just feel so free.ā
